I read that Prairie Dog article a while ago and loved it. Thanks for reminding me with your link! Of course, as a longtime lover of books like Watership Down, and various sci-fi books about telepathic cats (ah, Andre Norton, we miss you!) I never had any doubt that communication among various puffy animals was possible...
I read Watership Down so many times I wore the covers off. How's your Lapine? I usually lean more toward sci-fi than fantasy, but have you read Robin Hobbs' Farseer & Tawny Man trilogies? Lots of (non-cutesy) animal communication. I'd be happy to lend, if you're interested.
